The Texan or Western saddle comes from the eastern Rocky Mountains, from American cowboys, and it spread all the way to Canada. The Western saddle originated from Mexican Charro saddles. The Texan saddles were heavy, with double rigging and square skirts, as well as large and very simple. They were used by the western riders to drive their cattle on ranches.
The Texan saddle aims to provide comfort to the rider, as it is a saddle designed to spend many hours on horseback. A front horn was added to tie or control the cattle with a rope. Nowadays, the horn is hardly used, but it is the unique feature of Texan saddles. Made mostly of leather, it is important to keep it well oiled and clean.
